STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – After meeting when they were both teachers at a Manhattan high school, Joseph and Samara “Sam” Cuccurullo found they share a love for imparting knowledge to their students.
Having each earned two master’s degrees, he specializes in English and history, and she in math and science.
For years, Sam would tutor students on the weekend, traveling to their home for sessions. That’s when the pair decided to open their own tutoring business, The Resource Room — in the heart of New Dorp.
After achieving much success with the business — only open a little more than two years — the Cuccurullos opened their second location in June on Forest Avenue in West Brighton.
“I really like the flexibility that I have outside of the normal classroom environment. I get to teach so many different subjects now, and I work with so many different types of children of all different ages,” said Joe.
“In one day I’ll go from teaching a second-grader how to improve reading to global history at the high school level, to a verbal SAT class or teaching a TACHS (Test for Admission to Catholic High Schools) test group,” he added.
After the business got off to such a good start, Joe left the city Department of Education in December 2015 to run the Resource Room full-time.
